Want a Low-Pressure First Date? Go on a Coffee Date
Some people exaggerate first dates.
This isn't to say they're not a big deal. I get that there's a lot of pressure to impress your date, especially when meeting in a romantic setting for the first time.
But on the other hand, first dates are essentially about getting to know each other. If you focus on that, you don't have to go overboard with expensive candle-lit dinners or out-of-town adventures.
There are a lot of simple dates you can go on, and one of my favorites is the classic coffee date. It may seem cliché, but it's the go-to first date for good reason.
It's casual yet intimate—perfect for two strangers or acquaintances looking for a deeper connection. It's also budget-friendly. You don't have to empty your pockets if you're still testing the waters.
And finally, it serves as a neutral ground. If the date doesn't turn out well, you can exit smoothly. If it does, you can use it as an excuse to extend your date to dinner or do another activity.
All in all, there's not much at stake, and you can be as comfortable as you can be.
So, if you're looking for the perfect first date, grab a cup of coffee and settle yourselves in a cozy café.
To help you prepare, here are some tips and insights for a simple yet unforgettable coffee date.
1. Location
Cafés have different themes. Some have a vintage feel, while others are artsy and laidback. Others are more unique and offer activities such as arcade games, card games, or garden sightseeing.
Find a vibe that fits you and your date to make you most comfortable. Also, choose one that's close to where both of you live. If you don't mind traveling, pick one more accessible to your date.
2. Time
Cafés can be busy and loud during morning and lunch rush hours. Avoid shouting at each other over the noise by having your date mid-morning or in the afternoon.
Arrive ahead of time so you can choose a sweet spot. Corner tables and semi-private patios are the best spots to keep things cozy in a public place.
3. Drink Preference
It might be called a “coffee date,” but that doesn't mean you should exclusively drink caffeinated drinks. You and your date can order tea, hot chocolate, or juice.
Just make sure you go to a café that serves a variety of drinks other than coffee.
4. Outfit
Since it's a casual date, keep your outfit low-key yet presentable. Wear something comfortable that reflects your personality.
A simple shirt, a pair of jeans, and your best sneakers can also do the trick.
5. Conversation
Coffee dates give you the advantage of focusing on your conversation, helping you to get to know each other well.
Start with light topics to warm up your exchange. Ask them where they're from, what their day typically looks like, and what they're currently up to. When you feel more comfortable, and if it's appropriate, you can move on to deeper subjects.
High Advantages but Low Risks
Spending an hour on a coffee date is generally enough to see whether sparks ignite. If so, you're free to continue. But if not, you have an easy way out when you've finished your cup.
The advantages are high, and the risks are low. So, if you're still doubting what to do on your first date, the coffee shop is the place to go.
